Today we want to tell you in a nutshell, how to increase the power of an electric pistol (or even a rifle). By power we mean Not the power of the motor-battery unit but the power in joules with which the gun fires the pellet out of the barrel. For example, suppose we have an electric gun with a power of 0.6 Joules and we want to bring it to a power of 0.9 Joules, what should we do? On which internal components do we need to intervene? Now we tell you. We already anticipate that in a future article that will be released in a few days, we will tell you about how to increase the burst speed of your automatic electric pistol as the modifications required to obtain this result are different from those needed to increase the power output of the BBs, which is the subject of this article. Later, always in the next few days, we will also talk about how to increase both the firing power and the frequency of the burst, but now let’s go back to the modifications of our gun.

To increase the power of an electric gun we must necessarily intervene on the spring of the air group. This component is what determines the exit speed of the 6mm pellet used in softguns. In some cases, at least for small increases, for example to go from 0.6 Joule to 0.7 Joule, it may be enough to replace the spring with one with a higher load. On the airsoft catalogs you will find springs with a declared data, the speed that is able to impart to an airsoft pellet; when not otherwise specified, usually the speed indicated (in meters per second, m/s) refers to a 6 mm pellet with a mass of 0.20 grams.

For greater power increases, you will still have to act on the spring using one with greater “strength” but in this case you will also have to act on the gear-box and perhaps also on the engine. Let’s look at some cases:

If you want to increase the output power by giving up the burst speed you will have to:

– replace the spring with one with a greater load

– increase the gear-box reduction ratio (for example by going from a 14:1 ratio to a 16:1 or 17:1 ratio)

If you want to increase power output without losing burst speed you will need to:

– replace the spring with one with a greater load

– replace the motor with one having the same rotation speed (for example 25,000 rpm) but with a higher torque

OR

– replace the spring with one with a greater load

– replace the engine with one having a higher rotation speed (e.g. from 35,000 rpm) and increase the gear-box reduction ratio (e.g. going from a 14:1 ratio to a 16:1 or 17:1 ratio )

These are some quick pointers on how to increase the power of your airsoft gun. The same considerations also apply to automatic electric guns for airsoft. To make the article simple, we do not explain here the mechanical and electrical reasons behind these indications but only the indications themselves.
